The Mother Of All Small Business Problems?
Let’s face it. All your business problems are really one problem….and it’s time to deal with it and never look back. Yes, I am talking about Acquisition - getting clients in a predictable way.
The world of consulting, coaching, well… any business really… comes down to solving problems for customers. The more difficult, valuable, urgent, and painful the problem, the bigger the opportunity. And the better you are at solving it, faster, cheaper, more conveniently…the better you chances are at being seen as the only viable choice. And if you do, bingo. You’ve won.
What are some of these problems in the professional services space?
There is one that rises above all the rest.
I call it The Mother Of All Small Business Problems.
As you are well aware, everything in a business is predicated on customers choosing to pay money in exchange for something.
And because of this, when a business starts to have problems, you will most often find that something either who, how, or when the company acquires customers is not performing as it should.
What if you did not have to worry about where the next client will come from, when the money would come in? Wouldn’t that be awesome?
And wouldn’t it be great to not worry about money constantly?
Well, you can rid yourself of these problems (almost) completely.
You just need to find out what works, and do it consistently.
It’s simple.
Or is it?
Yes, it is. Much simpler than you might think.
You just need to do a few things right.
Teaching you what to do, and how to do them is easy.
But let’s dive deeper, because the root problem is deeper.
For every problem, there is both a symptom and a cause.
The symptom is the pain that surfaces.
“Omg, how will we make payroll? I feel terrible!”
That’s a symptom of a problem.
The problem might be that you did not consistently build relationships with prospects six months ago…
But what is the cause? What is the reason?
It might be that you hate sales.
Or, let’s re-frame it for what it is…you FEAR sales. Like, a lot.
On a coaching call recently, I asked a group the following questions;
“What could you do to get more clients?”
I got the “normal” response, the safe, tried responses that were not working out for the group. So I tried a re-frame.
“If you knew that you had to get 5 clients in the next 30 days, or you’d be shot to death, what would you do?”.
Still, mostly the same answers.
“Really, I said. No, that’s not what you would do…I can promise you….you would go find the customers, knock on doors, call almost anyone you could…you’d waste no time. I am certain you’d have your five clients…You’d do WHATEVER IT TAKES.”
A few people nodded…still wrestling with the question deep inside their minds.
Except for one person.
He said he’d rather take the bullet.
Excuse me, I thought? Are you for real?
But isn’t the fear of making next year just as bad as this year, and all previous years more painful? Isn’t it time to re-frame what marketing and selling means in your business?
What about the dream?
How can…Do you…What…never mind…
This was a great insight. Amazing, in fact.
This explains why so many business owners accept the constant uphill battle and struggle. If they would rather die that face up to their fears (and come across as “salesy”, or something else worse than dying…) then no wonder this is The Mother Of All Business Problems (just my term for this problem that keeps the world’s GDP down, kills dreams, keeps families from going on vacations…etc. etc.).
The fear of prospecting and selling is real, and we have to do something about it.
And it is holding back entrepreneurs from making their dreams real…from serving and making a difference, to achieving entrepreneurial freedom.
Just sad.
